Read, Write, Inc Phonics
At Calthwaite C of E Primary School, early reading is taught using Read, write, Inc. The programme uses synthetic phonics to teach reading and it covers all of the National Curriculum requirements for literacy and language.
We use this programme for:
- Pupils in Year R – Year 2
- Any pupils in Years 3 and 4 who need to catch up.
In RWI Phonics pupils:
- Decode letter – sound correspondences quickly and effortlessly, using their phonic knowledge and skills
- Read common exception words on sight
- Understand what they read
- Read aloud with fluency and expression
We group children homogeneously and assess and re-group every 6-8 weeks. Children have daily speed sound lessons followed by closely matched reading and writing activities. Pupils also have frequent practice in reading common exception words. We make sure that pupils access books that are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and the common exception words. This is so that, early on, they experience success and gain confidence that they are readers. Re–reading and discussing these books with the teacher supports their increasing fluent decoding. All teachers and TAs, who deliver RWI, receive regular CPD to refine and improve their practice.
A guide for parents:
The most important thing you can do with your child at home is read to them and with them each night.
Your child will bring home a reading book each week which matches their phonics level in school. Please read this book three times with them before returning to school to be changed. Children are also able to access extra resources, digital books and comprehension questions through their Reading Eggs login. This provides extra content for you and helps the children become more confident with their reading in class.
