Loose Parts Play

At Calthwaite School, children and staff love being outside and getting muddy! We think outdoor learning and free play is valuable in developing healthy minds, bodies and spirits. Loose parts play is available to children at playtimes when the field is not too boggy, and occasionally during curriculum time.

There is a great deal of evidence which shows the benefits of loose parts play for children. This kind of play encourages children to recognise safety and take reasonable risk for themselves, important skills needed throughout life.  Loose parts play can develop levels of creative and imaginative play, children play co-operatively and socialise more and are physically active.

The majority of pupils would like to play outdoors even during wet weather so we would really appreciate you sending your child to school with wellies to leave in school and ensuring a spare change of clothes is available every day in case it is needed.

The Scottish Government’s Loose Parts Play Toolkit is a great place to find out more.
